Greetings,
Rest in His Love
"And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them." — 1 John 4:16

Unpacking the Message of Verse 1 John 4:16
1 John 4:16 is a verse that speaks to the foundational truth of the Christian faith: God is love. The verse states, "And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them." This verse offers deep insight into the nature of God, the relationship between believers and Him, and the way love functions as the defining characteristic of true faith.
The first part of the verse, "And so we know and rely on the love God has for us," highlights both knowledge and dependence. Knowing God’s love is more than intellectual understanding; it is experiential. A believer does not simply read about God’s love in Scripture but experiences it through salvation, the work of the Holy Spirit, and personal transformation. This knowledge leads to reliance, meaning that trust in God’s love is essential for a believer’s daily life. Just as a child trusts a loving parent for provision and protection, believers are called to depend on God’s love for strength, guidance, and assurance. This aligns with Romans 8:38-39, which affirms that nothing can separate believers from the love of God in Christ Jesus.

The declaration "God is love" is one of the most profound theological statements in the Bible. It does not merely say that God has love or that He expresses love, but that He is love itself. Love is not just an attribute of God; it is His very essence. Every action He takes flows from His perfect love. This means that God’s justice, mercy, discipline, and grace are all expressions of His love. John 3:16 reinforces this truth by stating, "For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life." Love is the motivating force behind God’s actions, particularly in the redemption of humanity through Jesus Christ.
The verse continues by explaining the relationship between love and God’s presence: "Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them." This means that love is not just an emotion or a virtue but an indicator of a true relationship with God. A believer who genuinely knows God will reflect His love in their life. Jesus emphasized this in John 13:35, saying, "By this everyone will know that you are my disciples if you love one another." Love is the defining trait of a follower of Christ.
Living in love means allowing God’s love to shape every aspect of life—relationships, decisions, attitudes, and responses to challenges. It means showing kindness, patience, forgiveness, and compassion, even when it is difficult. The Apostle Paul describes this love in 1 Corinthians 13:4-7, where he writes that love is patient, kind, not easily angered, and always perseveres. This kind of love is not based on human effort but is a result of God’s presence within a believer.

The phrase "God in them" highlights the intimate nature of the believer’s relationship with God. When a person abides in love, they are abiding in God, and His Spirit dwells within them. This mirrors Jesus' words in John 15:4, "Remain in me, as I also remain in you." The indwelling of God’s Spirit transforms believers from the inside out, enabling them to love in ways that reflect His divine nature.
1 John 4:16 ultimately serves as both an assurance and a challenge. It reassures believers that God’s love is unwavering and that they can depend on it fully. At the same time, it challenges them to reflect that love in their daily lives. The more one abides in God, the more His love will flow through them, shaping their interactions with others and deepening their relationship with Him. Love is both the evidence of faith and the means by which believers grow in their walk with God.

Closing thoughts as I pray for those reading or hearing this verse today...
God’s love isn’t just something we acknowledge—it’s something we can fully rely on.
His love is constant, unshakable, and life-giving.
When we choose to live in love, we draw closer to Him, and His presence fills every part of our lives.
No matter what comes your way today, rest in the assurance that His love surrounds you.
Walk in it, share it, and let it guide your every step.
Blessings 🙏🏻
